What is 9 Rummy?
9 Rummy is a popular variation of the traditional Indian Rummy card game. It belongs to the Rummy family and emphasizes skillful arrangement of cards into valid sets and sequences. The name "9 Rummy" comes from the rule that a player must form at least 9 cards into valid combinations before declaring.
How to Play 9 Rummy
Players: 2 to 6
Deck: Two standard decks (including 4 Jokers)
Objective: Be the first player to organize your hand into valid sequences and/or sets, with at least 9 cards properly arranged, and discard the final card.
1. Dealing:
Each player receives 13 cards. The remaining cards form a draw pile. One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile.
2. Valid Combinations:
Sequence (Run): 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g.
5–
6–
7)
Set (Group): 3 or more cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g.
9–
9–
9)
Joker Substitution: Jokers can substitute missing cards in sequences or sets
Pure Sequence: A sequence with no Jokers (at least one pure sequence is mandatory)
3. Player Turn:
Draw 1 card (from draw pile or discard pile)
Discard 1 unwanted card to the discard pile
When you have at least 9 cards in valid sets/sequences (with one pure sequence), you may declare (end your game)
4. Winning the Game:
A player wins by declaring a valid hand that includes at least 9 grouped cards, one of which must be a pure sequence
Other players calculate penalty points based on ungrouped cards in their hand
Key Points & Tips
At least one pure sequence is mandatory — without it, your declaration is invalid.
Jokers are wild and can replace any card — except in a pure sequence.
Be strategic when discarding cards — don’t help opponents by revealing what you don’t need.
Declaring early isn't always better — you still need a valid hand or you'll be penalized.
