How do the official UNO rules from Mattel work?

UNO is a fast-paced card game for 2–10 players played with a special deck. Players are dealt seven cards each and take turns matching a card from their hand to the top card of the discard pile by color, number, or symbol. If a player cannot play, they must draw one card from the draw pile and either play it (if possible) or keep it.

Objective: Be the first player to score 500 points (in multi-round play) or simply be the first to get rid of all your cards in a single round.

Starting play: After dealing, the top card of the draw pile is turned over to start the discard pile. If an action card is turned up at the start, follow the official rulebook instructions for that card (commonly the effect applies to the first player).

Action cards and effects: Skip skips the next player; Reverse reverses play direction; Draw Two forces the next player to draw two cards and lose their turn; Wild lets the player choose the color to continue; Wild Draw Four lets the player choose the color and forces the next player to draw four cards (this card may only be legally played if the player has no card matching the current color).

Challenge rule (Wild Draw Four): A player who is targeted by a Wild Draw Four may challenge the previous player if they suspect an illegal play. If the challenger is correct (the Wild Draw Four was played illegally), the player who laid it must draw four cards instead; if the challenger is wrong, the challenger must draw six cards. Follow Mattel's rulebook for exact procedure and penalties.

Saying "UNO": When a player has only one card left, they must immediately say "UNO." If they fail to say "UNO" before another player calls them out and the error is caught, they must draw two penalty cards.

Winning a round and scoring: When a player plays their last card, the round ends. The winner scores points equal to the total value of the cards left in opponents' hands (number cards = face value; Draw Two/Reverse/Skip = 20 points each; Wild/Wild Draw Four = 50 points each). In casual single-round play, the first player to empty their hand is simply the winner of that round.

House rules: Many groups play with local variations (stacking Draw Twos, seven–zero swaps, or forcing play of Draw cards). For tournament or official play, follow Mattel's printed rulebook and tournament rules.
