Best ways to earn XP / level up in Minecraft
There are various different tactics a player can use to level up. Some methods will provide you with XP early in the game, and others will provide you with a significant number of points but cannot be accomplished in early gameplay. Gathering points “quickly” can be interpreted either way.
Since XP are usually only helpful in later gameplay when an enchanting table and anvil become available, many players prefer to use methods that yield a higher number of points rather than repeating easy, early game actions over and over again.

Here are the fastest ways to gain XP and level up in Minecraft:

Killing hostile mobs will drop orbs. Many players create hostile mob farms that spawn Minecraft mobs and then weaken them allowing a player to quickly kill the mob without much risk. Some players will use TNT (be sure to activate yourself and not use redstone) to accomplish this. Also, destroying a spawner block when mining or defeating the head mob, the Enderdragon, provides an extensive number of points.

Mining is a player's fastest way to gain XP early in the game. It's recommended you mine through the first night within the safety of your shelter rather than sleep in a bed in part to gain mining points.

Smelting means cooking certain ores or food in the furnace. Some players will create a furnace on their first day, while others will achieve that on their second day. In general, smelting iron and gold yield better XP. Cooking food (especially meat) will not only give a player better hunger and saturation points but XP as well. Unlike the other ways of gaining XP, smelting does not drop orbs that must be picked up. The points are simply automatically given to a player when the product is removed from the furnace (removing items automatically using redstone such as a hopper yields no XP).

Animals provide XP in two major ways. The first is through breeding, where an orb is dropped when a baby animal is produced. Breeding passive mobs is a significant part of Minecraft farming for a variety of reasons; XP are a pleasant bonus. Many players trap animals on the first day and begin breeding on the second or third day. Fighting skeletons (which also provide XP) help farming because the skeletons will drop bones (used as fertilizer on crops). The crops in turn can be used to breed animals. The second way is through fishing. Interestingly, XP are gained when the fish is reeled in, even if a player chooses not to pick up the fish. Fishing usually takes a few days, as a player will need to assemble a fishing rod, find a suitable place to fish, and not have other tasks that are more pressing.

Bottle o' Enchanting is similar to a potion bottle but is obtained only by trading with villagers. When broken, it releases orbs.

It’s important to note that not all methods generate the same amount of XP or grant any experience at all. For example, mining gold will not grant you any experience even though mining diamond ore grants XP. Check out the Minecraft Wiki for a more in-depth breakdown of the number of experience points granted by each source. Enjoy the journey to max level in Minecraft!

How to Earn Experience Points & Level Up in Minecraft
In Minecraft, experience points (XP) play a crucial role. They are used for enchanting items, repairing and renaming items with an anvil, and even mending items with the Mending enchantment. Here are the main ways to earn XP and level up:
1. Killing Mobs
Hostile Mobs: Most hostile mobs drop XP when killed. For example, common mobs like zombies, skeletons, and creepers typically drop 5 XP. However, some mobs offer more. Blazes, found in the Nether, drop 10 XP each. The Ender Dragon, when defeated for the first time, gives a whopping 12,000 XP, and 500 XP in subsequent defeats. Additionally, if a hostile mob spawns with weapons or armor, it will drop an extra 1 - 3 XP per piece of that equipment.
Passive Mobs: Passive mobs generally drop less XP. On average, they give around 2 XP. But it's important to note that baby animals, bats, golems, and villagers do not drop any XP when killed.
Mob Killing Rules: A mob must die within 5 seconds of being attacked by a player (this includes attacks from tamed wolves, player - thrown fireballs, and TNT activated by the player) to drop XP orbs. So, strategies like knocking a mob off a cliff or lighting it on fire can work to gain XP as long as the mob dies within the 5 - second window. Mobs killed by TNT activated by non - player means (such as fire, redstone, or an explosion not caused by the player) do not drop XP.
2. Mining
Ore Mining: Mining certain ores can yield XP. Ores that drop resources (like coal, diamond, emerald, lapis lazuli, and nether quartz) give XP when mined. Coal ore, for instance, drops 0 - 2 XP, while diamond and emerald ores drop 3 - 7 XP. However, if you mine an ore with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, the ore will drop as a block and no XP will be given. In such a case, you can place the block on the ground and mine it again with a regular pickaxe to get the XP, or smelt it in a furnace.
Monster Spawner: Destroying a monster spawner block gives 15 - 43 XP orbs.
3. Smelting and Cooking
Furnace Use: When you smelt items in a furnace, you gain XP. This includes smelting ores like iron ore to iron ingots, cooking food such as raw beef to steak, or making materials like sand into glass. The amount of XP gained varies depending on the item. For example, smelting iron ore gives a moderate amount of XP. It's important to note that the XP is only received when you take the smelted item out of the furnace. If you use a funnel to collect the item, the XP will remain in the furnace until you manually retrieve the item. When a furnace is broken, any accumulated XP will drop as experience orbs.
4. Fishing
Fishing is another way to earn XP. When you reel in a fish (or any item from fishing), you are awarded XP. The amount of XP received is random, but it's a consistent source of XP, especially if you set up an AFK fishing system.
5. Farming and Breeding
Animal Breeding: Breeding animals such as cows, sheep, and chickens can earn you XP. When the animals breed and a baby is born, you will receive XP. However, hatching chickens from eggs does not yield XP.
Crop Farming: While not a direct source of large amounts of XP, harvesting fully - grown crops can give a small amount of XP over time. This is more of a secondary way to earn XP while focusing on food production.
6. Trading
In Java Edition, trading with villagers or Wandering merchant can earn you XP. Each successful trade gives a certain amount of XP, and the amount can vary depending on the type of trade and the villager's profession.
7. Using Enchanted Items
Enchanted Bottles: Finding and breaking enchanted bottles (Bottle o' Enchanting) gives you XP. These bottles can sometimes be bought from villager priests in exchange for emeralds, or found in chests in dungeons, strongholds, and other structures.
Mending Enchantment: Items with the Mending enchantment can absorb XP orbs to repair themselves. While this doesn't directly give you more XP, it helps you keep your valuable enchanted items in good condition without using an anvil and losing XP in the process.
Experience Levels
As you collect XP, your experience level increases. Levels 1 - 16 each require 17 XP to reach the next level. After level 16, the amount of XP needed for each subsequent level increases. For levels 16 - 30, you need 5 * (current level) - 38 XP to level up, and for levels 31 and above, you need 9 * (current level) - 158 XP. Understanding these requirements can help you plan your XP - gathering activities, especially if you are saving up for high - level enchantments.
