TILE RUMMY FIELD NOTE 05
Planning the Initial Meld
Calculate an opening meld, balance speed against rack quality and avoid exposing useful tiles too early.

Calculate an opening meld, balance speed against rack quality and avoid exposing useful tiles too early.
Open with purpose
Many Tile Rummy formats require a minimum point total played entirely from your own rack before you may manipulate table melds. The exact threshold is a house rule, so state it clearly before the first draw.
A practical method
A fast opening creates access to the table, but using every flexible connector can damage the rest of the rack. Compare at least two opening plans: the highest immediate total and the plan that leaves the best follow-up structure.
Apply it at the table
Count twice. A miscalculated initial meld can force the whole move back and may carry a penalty under local rules.
Good Tile Rummy decisions are visible: every tile has one legal place, every rearrangement has a finished plan.
