Understand the essential vocabulary for racks, runs, groups, jokers, openings, draws and table manipulation.
Core vocabulary
Rack: the holder for a player’s private tiles. Run: consecutive numbers in one colour. Group: the same number in different colours. Meld: any legal run or group. Draw: taking a tile when no move is made.
A practical method
Initial meld: the first qualifying play made from a player’s rack. Extension: adding a tile to an existing meld. Split: dividing a long legal run into two legal runs.
Apply it at the table
Joker: a flexible replacement tile governed by house rules. Home rack: an empty rack at the end of a legal finish.
Good Tile Rummy decisions are visible: every tile has one legal place, every rearrangement has a finished plan.
