Treat the joker as flexibility
A joker can represent a missing tile inside a legal run or group. Its value comes from solving a difficult gap, not from being played at the first available opportunity. Preserve it when ordinary tiles can complete the same meld.
A practical method
House rules differ on how a joker may be replaced and reused. Agree on the replacement procedure before play. A common approach requires the exact represented tile, followed by immediate legal reuse of the recovered joker.
Apply it at the table
Plan the joker move from finish to start. Identify its final meld, confirm every intermediate combination and only then touch the shared table.
