Is three-player gin possible?
Traditional gin rummy is designed for two players, but groups often use an agreed three-player adaptation. Because rules vary, write down the deal, turn order, knocking rule and scoring before starting.
How many cards?
A common adaptation deals seven or ten cards to each player depending on the desired pace and deck size. Seven cards leaves a healthier stock and produces shorter rounds. Ten cards feels closer to two-player gin but may require careful reshuffling.
Basic setup
Use one standard deck, choose a dealer, deal clockwise, place the remaining stock face down and turn one card up. Each player draws one card and discards one, with play moving clockwise.
Melds and deadwood
Sets use equal ranks and runs use consecutive cards of one suit. Cards outside melds are deadwood. Agree the maximum deadwood allowed to knock and what happens if another player undercuts.
Scoring choices
One approach compares the knocker with both opponents separately. Another awards a fixed round result. Choose the simpler method for beginners and keep a visible score sheet.
Stock exhaustion
Three players consume the stock faster. Agree when to end the round or reshuffle the discard pile, always leaving its top card visible. Do not invent the rule after the stock is nearly empty.
