Why scoring must be agreed first
Rummy includes many variants, so the table should confirm values and the winning condition before dealing. A written scoring note prevents arguments and helps beginners understand the consequence of carrying unmatched cards.
Common card values
Numbered cards usually count at face value. Jack, queen and king commonly count as ten points each. Ace may count as one, ten, eleven or a special value depending on the variant. Jokers are usually zero when legally melded.
Unmatched-card method
After a player goes out, other players total cards not included in valid melds. If a hand has K♣, 8♦ and 3♠ unmatched, the common total is 21 points. Completed legal groups normally contribute zero penalty.
Indian rummy points
In many Indian rummy formats, unmatched cards are counted with face cards and ace at ten, with a cap often applied by the chosen rules. A correct pure sequence and second sequence determine whether other groups can be recognised.
Gin-style scoring
Gin rummy commonly scores the difference in deadwood, plus bonuses defined by the rules. Knocking, gin and undercut scoring differ from Indian rummy, so do not transfer one system into another without agreement.
Keep a transparent score sheet
Record the round winner, each player’s unmatched total and any valid bonus. Fixed practice limits and clear scoring keep sessions educational and easy to review.
