Why seven-card rummy feels different
A seven-card hand reaches decisions quickly. There is less room for several competing plans, so connected cards and completed melds become more valuable early.
Setup
Use a standard deck, deal seven cards to each player, place the rest face down, and turn one card up for the discard pile. For larger groups or repeated duplicate ranks, agree whether a second deck is needed.
Turn rules
Draw one card, then discard one. Players form sets of equal ranks or runs of consecutive cards in one suit. A player goes out when the hand is legally organised under the agreed house rules.
Picking up cards
You normally pick up only the top card of the discard pile or one card from the stock. Some household variants allow taking a longer discard sequence, but that rule must be declared before the round.
Short-hand decisions
Prefer cards that connect on both sides, such as a six that can join 4–5 or 7–8. Avoid carrying isolated high cards too long because a seven-card hand can end before a speculative combination develops.
Scoring agreement
Use a simple score for learning: face cards at ten, numbered cards at face value, and ace according to the selected rules. The winner scores the unmatched value remaining in opponents’ hands.
