How two-player rummy works

Two-player rummy is fast because every discard has only one opponent. Use one standard 52-card deck for a straightforward home game. Agree on the hand size and scoring before the deal; ten cards each is a common learning format, while some variants use seven or thirteen.

Set up and deal

Shuffle thoroughly, choose the first dealer, deal one card at a time, and place the remaining cards face down as the stock. Turn one card face up to begin the discard pile. The non-dealer normally takes the first turn.

The draw and discard cycle

On every turn, draw exactly one card from either the stock or the top of the discard pile, organise the hand, then discard one card. A player should finish the turn with the agreed hand size. The visible discard offers information, but it can also help the opponent.

Valid melds

A set contains cards of the same rank in different suits. A run contains consecutive cards of the same suit. Agree how aces work before starting; they are usually low or high, but not allowed to wrap from king through ace to two.

A practical two-person example

Suppose you hold 4♥–5♥ and draw 6♥: that forms a run. If you hold 9♣–9♦ and draw 9♠, that forms a set. Keep flexible connecting cards and release isolated high cards when they no longer support a realistic plan.

How to finish responsibly

Declare only after every card is arranged according to the chosen variant. Recheck each run and set before exposing the hand. For practice, play short fixed rounds and record decisions rather than treating every draw as a test of luck.
