Indian Rummy Rules: Complete Beginner Guide

The objective

Indian rummy is commonly learned with thirteen-card hands. The goal is to organise all cards into legal sequences and sets. In widely played formats, a valid declaration needs at least two sequences and at least one must be a pure sequence made without a joker.

Pure and impure sequences

A pure sequence contains three or more consecutive cards of one suit without a substituted joker. An impure sequence follows the same order but uses a joker as a substitute. Build the pure sequence early because it protects the basic validity of the hand.

Sets and card order

A set uses three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. A run follows rank order within one suit. Duplicate suit cards do not normally form a valid set. Ace rules can vary, so confirm whether ace is low, high, or either before play.

Every turn

Draw one card from the closed deck or open pile, review the hand, and discard one card. Sort by suit, protect natural connectors, and observe which ranks and suits appear in the open pile. Do not collect unrelated possibilities indefinitely.

Using jokers

Printed and selected wild jokers can complete impure sequences or sets under the table rules. A joker is flexible, but it does not replace the pure-sequence requirement. Avoid locking every joker into the first possible group if a stronger structure may develop.

Valid declaration checklist

Before declaring, verify the pure sequence, the second sequence, every set, and every substituted joker. One invalid group can invalidate the whole declaration. Beginners benefit from using the same checklist after every draw until the pattern becomes automatic.
