Choose the format first
The word rummy covers several related games. Decide whether the table is playing basic draw-and-discard rummy, Indian thirteen-card rummy, gin, pool rummy or a household version before choosing the deal.
Two and three players
Two-player basic rummy often uses seven or ten cards. Gin commonly uses ten. Three-player tables may use seven or ten depending on stock size, while Indian rummy commonly deals thirteen and may use two decks.
Five and six players
Larger groups generally need two decks, especially for thirteen-card hands. For a shorter family game, deal seven cards. For Indian rummy, use the established thirteen-card structure and sufficient combined decks and jokers.
Books and runs
A book is another name for a set: equal ranks in different suits. A run is a consecutive same-suit sequence. Local vocabulary differs, but legality should be defined before the first deal.
Pool rummy overview
Pool rummy uses repeated deals and an agreed cumulative point limit. The precise limits, entry rules and scoring vary by platform or household format. Learn the valid-declaration rules before focusing on the pool total.
Quick deal table
For basic practice: two players can take ten cards; three or four can take seven; five or six can take seven with two decks. For Indian rummy, thirteen cards is the familiar format, supported by enough decks for the table size.
